Ansari gets life term for kidnapping
KOLKATA: Aftab Ansari, facing death in the 2002 terror attack on the American Centre in Kolkata, was on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment
along with four others for kidnapping shoe baron Partha Roy Burman in 2001. Seventeen other accused in the case were acquitted for lack of evidence.
Additional district judge Biswarup Bandyopadhyay delivered the judgment in a court inside the high security Alipore Central Jail. Jamaluddin Nasir, one of those acquitted in the Barman kidnapping case, was earlier sentenced to death along with Aftab Ansari in the American Center attack case.
The case assumed international ramifications as part of the ransom was reportedly used for funding the 9/11 attack in New York and Washington.
